12/3/2008 Trever Miller, RP (StL) Miller and the St. Louis Cardinals finalized a one-year contract Wednesday.

Analysis: Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said improving the bullpen, especially from the left side, was a priority for the offseason. Tampa Bay declined a $2 million option last month, electing to pay Miller a $400,000 buyout.
12/3/2008 Russell Branyan, 3B (Sea) Branyan and the Seattle Mariners agreed Wednesday to a one-year contract.

Analysis: The Mariners hope the 32-year-old first baseman will fill their need for a left-handed power hitter. He began the season at Triple-A and was brought up on May 24, then was sidelined from Aug. 10-Sept. 26 with a strained muscle in his right side and was left off the Brewers' postseason roster.
12/3/2008 Chad Fox, RP (ChC) Fox and the Chicago Cubs agreed to a minor league contract Wednesday.

Analysis: Fox was added to the Cubs' roster May 2 and was 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in three relief appearances before a season-ending injury to his right elbow. That was his first major league action since 2005.
12/3/2008 Bob Howry, RP (SF) The Giants took another step toward bolstering their bullpen Wednesday, agreeing to terms on a $2.75 million, one-year contract with Howry.

Analysis: The Giants had been looking for a reliable right-handed reliever and filled another spot with Howry, who was declined salary arbitration by the Chicago Cubs on Monday. San Francisco already signed reliever Jeremy Affeldt last month.
12/3/2008 Mike Hampton, SP (Hou) Hampton finalized a one-year, $2 million deal with the Houston Astros on Wednesday, hoping to resurrect his career in the place where he became a prominent big league pitcher.

Analysis: Hampton sat out the 2006 season after Tommy John surgery and did not pitch in 2007 because of an oblique injury and an elbow problem that required season-ending surgery. Hampton went 3-4 with a 4.85 ERA in 13 starts for the Braves this year. At the end of the season, he expressed interest in returning the Astros.
12/3/2008 Dustin Pedroia, 2B (Bos) The Boston Red Sox have agreed to terms with Pedroia on a six-year contract worth $40.5 million, The Associated Press has learned. Pedroia, who would not have been eligible for free agency until after the 2012 season, will remain with the Red Sox until 2014, with a club option for '15.

Analysis: Pedroia led the AL in hits, runs and doubles in helping the Red Sox win a wild-card berth in 2008. He batted .326 with 17 home runs and 83 RBIs and also stole 20 bases to become the first AL second baseman to win the MVP award since Nellie Fox in 1959 with the Chicago White Sox.
12/3/2008 Javier Vazquez, SP (CWS) Vazquez is likely headed from the Chicago White Sox to the Atlanta Braves in a multiplayer trade.

Analysis: The teams reached a tentative agreement Tuesday that would send the 32-year-old pitcher to Atlanta, two people familiar with the deal said. That could happen Wednesday. Vazquez must take a physical for the deal to be completed, one of the people said, and he was likely to be examined Wednesday. The right-hander was 12-16 with a 4.67 ERA in 33 starts for the AL Central champions this season, surpassing 200 innings for the eighth time in nine years.
12/2/2008 Doug Brocail, RP (Hou) Brocail is staying with the Houston Astros, agreeing Tuesday to a $2.75 million, one-year contract that includes a club option for 2010.

Analysis: The 41-year-old right-hander was a reliable setup man for Houston closer Jose Valverde this season, going 7-5 with a 3.93 ERA in a career-high 72 appearances.
12/1/2008 Nick Evans, LF (NYM) Evans has a strained right quadriceps and will stop playing winter ball in Puerto Rico.

Analysis: Evans was examined Monday in New York, and will undergo three to four weeks of therapy at home in Arizona. The first baseman, who hit .257 with two homers and nine RBIs in 50 games as a rookie last season, is expected to be ready for spring training.
12/1/2008 Moises Alou, LF (NYM) The Mets did not offer arbitration to free agent Moises Alou on Monday.

Analysis: Alou hit .347 with nine RBIs last season, but was limited to just 15 games as he dealt with a variety of injuries, most recently, surgery on his right hamstring.
12/1/2008 Pedro Martinez, SP (NYM) The Mets did not offer arbitration to free agent Pedro Martinez on Monday.

Analysis: Martinez made 20 starts last season for the Mets, going 5-6 with a 5.61 ERA and 87 strikeouts.
12/1/2008 Oliver Perez, SP (NYM) Perez was offered salary arbitration Monday by the New York Mets, who would receive two compensatory draft picks if the left-hander signs with another team.

Analysis: Perez was 10-7 with a 4.22 ERA in 34 starts this season. He had 180 strikeouts and 105 walks in 194 innings. He has until Sunday to accept the arbitration offer.
12/1/2008 Frank Thomas, DH (Oak) The Oakland Athletics declined to offer salary arbitration to their four free agents Monday, including slugger Frank Thomas.

Analysis: Thomas joined the A's on April 24 after being released by Toronto, but missed much of the season. The 40-year-old designated hitter spent two stints on the disabled list and played only 55 games, batting .263 with five homers and 19 RBIs. He has said he hopes to play up to two more seasons before retiring.
12/1/2008 Ken Griffey Jr., RF (CWS) New general manager Jack Zduriencik said Monday he has had preliminary talks with Griffey Jr.'s agent.

Analysis: A free agent who became a superstar with the Mariners a decade ago, the 39-year-old Griffey hit a combined .249 with 18 homers and 71 RBIs in 143 games last season for the Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago White Sox. He agreed to a midseason trade to Chicago for a chance to play in the postseason and went 2-for-10 as the White Sox lost in four games to Tampa Bay in the first round of the AL playoffs. But declined Griffey's $16.5 million contract option for 2009.
12/1/2008 Brad Penny, SP (LAD) The Dodgers declined an arbitration offer to free agent Brad Penny on Monday.

Analysis: Penny went 6-9 with a career-high 6.27 ERA in 2008 as he was limited to just 19 appearances due to a variety of injuries to his right shoulder.
12/1/2008 Nomar Garciaparra, SS (LAD) The Dodgers declined an arbitration offer to free agent Nomar Garciaparra on Monday.

Analysis: Garciaparra is coming off of an injury-plagued season in which he was limited to just 55 games because of a sprained medial collateral ligament, a strained left calf and a microfracture in his right hand. He batted .264 with eight homers and 28 RBIs in his appearances.
12/1/2008 Greg Maddux, SP (LAD) The Dodgers declined an arbitration offer to free agent Greg Maddux on Monday.

Analysis: The 42-year-old Maddux, who won his record 18th Gold Glove in November, went 8-13 with a 4.22 ERA in 33 starts last season. It's still unclear if the veteran right-hander will opt for retirement after collecting 355 career wins.
12/1/2008 Casey Blake, 3B (LAD) The Los Angeles Dodgers offered Blake salary arbitration on Monday. He has until Sunday to accept the offer, in which case he would be assured a spot on the 2009 roster.

Analysis: Blake was acquired in a trade from Cleveland in late July, and hit a collective .274 with 21 homers and 81 RBIs in 152 games. He also hit .267 (8-for-30) with a homer and four RBIs in eight postseason contests.
12/1/2008 Derek Lowe, SP (LAD) The Los Angeles Dodgers offered Lowe salary arbitration on Monday. He has until Sunday to accept the offer, in which case he would be assured a spot on the 2009 roster.

Analysis: Lowe went 14-11 with a 3.24 ERA in 34 regular-season starts, and won his only postseason appearance for the Dodgers.
12/1/2008 Manny Ramirez, LF (LAD) The Los Angeles Dodgers offered Ramirez salary arbitration on Monday. He has until Sunday to accept the offer, in which case he would be assured a spot on the 2009 roster.

Analysis: Ramirez, acquired from Boston in a three-team trade in July, batted .396 with 17 homers and 53 RBIs in 53 games with the Dodgers. Collectively, he hit .332 with 37 homers and 121 RBIs in 153 games overall. He also went 13-for-25 (.520) with four homers and 10 RBIs in eight postseason games.
