Live Commentary
Summary: That brings the fantastic Silverstone race to a close. It was nail-biting to the finish. Dovizioso took a much-deserved, well-earned win after making a calculated move with three laps to go. With this very important win and Marquez's surprise engine blowout, he now leads the championship by 9 points. Vinales's move on Rossi pushed him into second. The Italian couldn't fight back because of tyre problems leaving him to pick up a 3rd. We now move to Italy and the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli on September 10. See you then.
Lap 20: Dovi has managed to keep his lead. Vinales closes the gap a tad, but is it too late. DOVIZIOSO WINS THE RACE! Pol Espargaro crashes after the chequered flag!!! Rider ok. That was a strange crash.
Lap 19: Petrucci and Iannone tangle and both riders crash. They are ok. As the race currently stands, Dovi leads the championship with 9 points. Aleix Espargaro retires.
Lap 18: Dovi is right there. And he goes side by side. and passes Rossi! DOVI LEADS THE RACE! Vinales passes Rossi too and now has to deal with Crutchlow.
Lap 17: Dovi has managed to catch up and is waiting to make his move. He makes his move but seems to rethink that move. Dovi gets really close, but not close enough.
Lap 16: Vinales and Crutchlow are getting ready to battle it out. Dovi is still on the prowl. So, so close. Vinales is on the charge though. He knows Crutchlow is all over his back.
Lap 15: Meanwhile, Dovi is hunting Rossi and is waiting to make his move. Looks like an engine blowout for Marquez. The gap is down now to .295 and lining up to pass Rossi. Meanwhile, Crutchlow is trying to move past Vinales.
Lap 14: Dovi has managed to cut Rossi's gap down quite a bit. He is hunting the Yamaha rider. DISASTER STRIKES! Marquez's bike comes to a stop in a puff of smoke. MARQUEZ RETIRES! With this Dovi is leading the championship!
Lap 13: Dovi manages to cut into Rossi's lead slowly, but surely. Dovi has taken 2/10th off Rossi's time. Dovi is nearing and the gap between him and Rossi is reducing. But Marquez is right there too.
Lap 12: Dovi fights back and takes second place. Thank you very much. He is now trying to catch Rossi. Vinales attacks once again, but Dovi holds him off. Vinales is all over his rear wheel and is surprised by Marquez who sneaks by and takes third. Marquez is back to trailing Dovi and is all over the Ducati's rear wheel.
Lap 11: Dovi and Vinales battle. Wheel to wheel changing places and Dovi manages to make it stick and takes second place. This is fantastic news for Rossi who is now managing to extend his lead. Vinales fights back and takes his place back
Lap 10: Marquez now sets a new record with 2:01.560. Dovi and Marquez battle it out. They were side by side there!
Lap 9: Zarco finally manages to make it past Pedrosa.
Lap 8: Vinales is not looking at making a move right now, but is cutting into Rossi's lead inch by inch.
Lap 7: Rossi still leads, but the key to his victory lies in tyre management. Marquez is trying to pass Dovi, but the Ducati is unbeatable right now. Marquez needs to make his move, because if he doesn't, Crutchlow may just make his move. The Brit is all over the Spaniard's rear.
Lap 6: Vinales is keeping it steady. Everyone seems to have settled in and then just when no one is expecting it, Dovizioso makes his move on Marquez passing the championship leader. Sam Lowes has crashed out. Rider ok. Marquez is trying to fight back, but Dovi manages to stay ahead, just about.
Lap 5: New lap record for Vinales. 2.01.638 and with that has cut down on Rossi's lead, which is now down to .945s. This is nailbiting stuff and we are still in the early stages of the race. Zarco is making progress and trying to catch up with a struggling Pedrosa. Zarco's teammate is not racing today. Jonas Folger had a huge crash earlier on - so it's a precautionary move and he is in hospital for a CT scan
Lap 4: Rossi clocks in the fastest lap. It's a new record, and has beaten Dani Pedrosa's four-year-old record. That's 2.01.855s. But Vinales is still making tiny gains. The biggest concern for Rossi is tyre management. Dovi is pressurizing Marquez now even as gaps are opening up between the first three contenders.
Lap 3: Vinales takes 2nd place after passing Marquez on the inside. Rossi is on the move and has managed to pull away, just about 1.231s ahead of his teammate. Dovi passes Crutchlow and is trying to make a move on Marquez but doesn't make it stick. Vinales has managed to cut into Rossi's gap. Rossi's hard rear tyre seems to be working, but will he be able to sustain it? Marquez sneaks a peek at Vinales.
Lap 2: Dovizioso passes Lorenzo and takes 5th place just as they start the second lap. Vinales is managing to just about hold off Crutchlow who has Dovi to deal with. Dovi tries to pull a fast one on Crutchlow but the Brit doesn't let go of his spot. Vinales tries to pass Marquez, but he isn't close enough.
Lap 1: The British GP in Silverstone is a go! Vale sneaks past Marquez and leads the race. Vinales passes Crutchlow and is on a charge. Marquez is keeping Vinales honest. Big moment from Marquez but he keeps its steady and ahead of Vinales. Rossi is trying to get away, but Marquez is staying close.
Preview: It’s time to dive into beautiful Silverstone, one of the oldest circuits on the MotoGP calendar—the first motorcycle Grand Prix event was in 1977. Qualifying already brought some phenomenal excitement with a showdown for pole between championship leader Marc Marquez and nine times world champion Valentino Rossi. Marquez outsmarted Rossi while breaking his own pole time record. The Italian, though, came quite close to taking the Spaniard’s place but had to be happy with a second. Cal Crutchlow proved he was hungry for a podium and though he couldn’t repeat last year’s pole, will start from the first row on the grid. Here’s hoping for another nail-biting, heart-thumping race. Tune in for the race at 2.30 pm GMT.
