Live Commentary
Summary: What a race! After watching the riders pick their way through the rain-drenched track, it all came to a head at the penultimate lap when Marc Marquez stopped playing it safe. As Marquez and race leader Petrucci crossed the line to start the final lap, the Spaniard made his move, passed the Italian and won the race. This puts him next to Dovizioso in the championship points with both riders at 199 points. Next up is MotorLand Aragon two weeks from now. See you there!
Lap 28: Marquez leads! Petrucci tries to fight back. Petrucci is looking for a way past, but Marquez has managed to get away, just about. Two corners left and Marquez still leads and WINS! What a brilliant move from the Spaniard. Zarco crashes out. Rider ok. He is running and pushing his bike across the finish line. Zarco picks up a point!
Lap 27: It's the penultimate lap and Marquez is looking for a way past Petrucci. Will Marquez pull a move at the last minute. It certainly looks like it.
Lap 26: As they cross the line and start the 26th lap of the race, Marquez is right on Petrucci's tail. He is looking like he's getting ready to attack, Marquez style. Marquez is almost on Petrucci's rear tyre.
Lap 25: Dovi is slowing down it almost seems like. He is playing it safe. Marquez keeps the pressure on but Petrucci is staying ahead.
Lap 24: Marquez has begun his attack it seems. But Petrucci is managing to stay ahead just about. He wants his maiden podium!
Lap 23: Big moment for Petrucci. He manages to save his bike. Marquez meanwhile is right on Petrucci's tail. He is waiting to make his move.
Lap 22: Marquez has picked up pace. He clocks in the fastest lap. Looks like he is now getting ready to attack. Shaving the gap down to .444s now. Now, Petrucci clocks in the fastest lap. He has put the hammer down with 1:47.537.
Lap 21: Petrucci clocks in the fastest lap with a 1:47.697. Rabat crashes out. Rider ok. He walks away.
Lap 20: Petrucci has set his best lap of the race. Pirro meanwhile manages to get past Miller. Crutchlow is on a charge and battles with Pedrosa. He managed to make up points after his crash. Pedrosa has been having a bad race and is struggling.
Lap 19: Baz has crashed again. Rider ok. A pity, since he had just about managed to get back in the points. The Frenchman has re-joined the race.
Lap 18: Marquez has dropped back a bit. Iannone has entered the pits. He has retired. Baz meanwhile has managed to come back and is now at 15th.
Lap 17: Dovi looks particularly threatening right now. It seems he is just waiting to make his move. Meanwhile, the track seems to be drying out. The Yamaha bike is out of the garage as well. Dovi's Ducati though, at the last check, was still with the wet setup.
Lap 16: Petrucci still in the lead. But Marquez has a moment and it looks like Dovi has picked up pace. Nearly side-by-side. Sam Lowes crashes out. That's his fifth crash of the weekend. Rider ok.
Lap 15: Aleix Espargaro goes down. He gets back on the bike and it looks like he is trying to rejoin the race. Marquez has managed to shave off a little time, not much.
Lap 14: It's status quo this lap. Everyone is being a tad careful.
Lap 13: Barbera has crashed out. Rider ok, though limping away. That looked painful. Petrucci has managed to stay ahead of Marquez and Dovi.
Lap 12: Honda brings out the second bike for Marquez with a dry setup. Vinales seems to have made his peace with a 4th place. Though Miller is still behind him, doggedly chasing him down.
Lap 11: Miller is gaining on Vinales, slowly but surely. Marquez has another little moment.
Lap 10: Petrucci is just about managing to stay ahead of Marquez. Miller however has not managed to pass Vinales. Baz OUT! Rider ok, he lost the front end. He is back on his bike and rejoined the race.
Lap 9: Dovi is playing safe and not taking any risks.
Lap 8: Petrucci leads, but don't discount Marquez who is chasing the Italian. Replay of Crutchlow's crash, that was a highside. Baz and MIller battling for position and Miller passes the Frenchman, smooth as butter. The garages are busy. The rain has stopped, though the track is still wet.
Lap 7: The Honda team are preparing the second bike. Looks like he is struggling. Crutchlow is out! Lorenzo is OUT! Riders ok. Though Crutchlow rejoins. Lorenzo walks away. He had a massive gas, just after he clocked in the fastest lap.
Lap 6: Massive battle going on behind though. Pedrosa is struggling but Pirro is moving as is Baz who has passed Zarco. Meanwhile Marquez signals his team. Looks like he may be coming in for a swap. Miller and Crutchlow have made it past Vinales and Miller has passed Crutchlow.
Lap 5: Marquez is probably coming to terms with that scare. Petrucci though is a man with a mission. He is chasing down Dovi and clocks in the fastest lap. Petrucci passes Dovi and now sets his sights on Marquez, but he hasn't quite managed to get away from Dovi. Vinales still has Crutchlow and Miller to contend with.
Lap 4: Lorenzo, meanwhile, has managed to get himself a gap of 1.8s. Also the fastest lap. Vinales has Crutchlow and Miller to deal with. Miller tries to pass Crutchlow, but the Brit rider stays stubborn. Lorenzo has managed to increase the gap.
Lap 3: Marquez had set the fastest lap just moments before the big moment. Just like Crutchlow.
Lap 2: Lorenzo is still in the lead. They don't seem to treading carefully, rain or no rain. Marquez though is shadowing him. Petrucci is not letting anyone get past him and is busy hounding Vinales already. He's nibbling at the back of his tyre and passes the Yamaha rider, smooth as you please. Petrucci is now attacking Dovi. Meanwhile, a big moment for Marquez. Steady does it.
Lap 1: And the San Marino GP is a go. It's a wet race that is going to be particularly tricksy. Jorgeo Lorenzo has got a great start and sneaks his way past to lead. Karel Abraham is out, crashed! Abraham is ok. Vinales lost out and slipped down to 4th. The spray is debilitating. Petrucci though is not letting the rain get better of him as he swept past Zarco and Miller.
Preview: The madness that was Silverstone is done and dusted and the MotoGP circus has found its way to the Republic of San Marino and the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. However, this time around, the sun-yellow flags may be few and far between. Nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi will not be racing at Misano after an enduro training accident left him with a broken tibia and fibula. As the Italian recovers, it’s up to his teammate Maverick Vinales to keep the Yamaha flag flying high. Not that it has been difficult. Despite moody weather conditions through Friday and Saturday, the Spaniard snatched the pole right from under Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso’s nose on the penultimate lap during qualifying. Marc Marquez makes up the third in the front row, followed by Cal Crutchlow and Jorge Lorenzo. But there is just one question on everyone’s mind: Will Dovizioso continue his stellar performance and extend his championship lead. He will, of course, have to contend with Marquez who led the wet warm up session and the rain. Catch the race today at 12pm GMT.
